Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2 NIV)
When I first read Romans 12:2 I'm pretty sure I didn't read the whole thing. If I had, surely I would've avoided a lot of pain. Growing up, I read the bible every night out of guilt. I would speed read one paragraph a night or I felt too guilty to sleep. The trouble with guilty speed-reading is that I would read the negative sounding "do not conform" and add it to my long list of things not to do and miss the whole point of the verse or passage. I would berate myself "do not conform, do not conform" but have no idea what I was not conforming to. Plus, I read a lot of things out of context so that was not exactly helpful either.
Renewing my mind means replacing destructive, negative thoughts or lies with God's truth. God's truth is what is transformational and good and available to all who trust in Him. Conforming to the pattern of this world means believing lies about myself: I am not pretty enough, good enough, smart enough. or crying out loud, look at a magazine. Most of the messages (body image, etc) are not good patterns of thinking.
Renewing my mind will replace any lie with the truth.
Try renewing your mind, or replacing lies with truth, by memorizing verses to repeat when a particular lie is getting you down. Your mind will eventually be renewed, I promise!
If you believe the lie that you are UGLY, repeat the truth that God says you are BEAUTIFUL:
You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you. (Song of Solomon 4:7 NIV)
If you believe the lie that you are DIRTY, repeat the truth that God says you are CLEAN:
You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. (John 15:3 NIV)
If you believe the lie that you are UNLOVEABLE, repeat the truth that God says you are LOVED:
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. (1 John 3:1 NIV)
