The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:12
Ever compare yourself to someone else?
Ugh. I do. I beat myself up for my weaknesses, and am jealous of the strengths of others.
Above is a picture of my friend, Rebekah, and I. Rebekah’s personality type is Natural-Born Leader and mine is Free Spirit. Can you guess which of the speakers is me in the picture above? Uh, yeah. You probably can.
I’m the Executive Director of Lane of Roses & Rebekah is the Director of Operations. There have been many times I’ve wished to be more organized and efficient like her. I’ve been jealous of leadership qualities that come easy to her--like managing systems and creating order out of chaos.
But Jesus says, “The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it.” We are all valuable parts of the same body.
This is the BEST news ever because: I don’t have to be organized! Woo! Rebekah can help me when my Google Drive is a mess. And in return, I can use my gifts to encourage her. I’m great at starting things and Rebekah is great at finishing them. We fill in each other’s gaps.
Next time you’re tempted to be jealous of someone, remember: community over comparison. You don’t have to excel at everything, excel at one thing. God gives us other people for a reason: we are better together.
How can you view a friend’s God-given gifts as a blessing instead of a source of jealousy?
How can you help a friend using your unique gifts?
God, thanks for giving me other people. Thanks for giving me gifts to use to help others, and thank you for giving me others to lift me up when I feel like I just can’t go on. Thanks for the gift of community.
