It's Unconditional

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow - not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. -Romans 8:38

God’s love is not conditional love. It doesn’t matter how broken you think you are or how dark of a place you’re in right now. God’s love is relentless. His love cannot be measured or removed from us. I often feel the need to earn God’s love, or diminish it to match my unworthiness. Fully understanding how loved I am is hard. Thankfully, we can get hope from Paul’s story.

Romans 8 was written by Paul, a man who used to kill Christians for a living. He often writes how he was the lowest of the low, but still knows and believes that he is fully redeemed and loved by God. So, if a guy who used to kill Christians can believe he is loved, then we can too. If you struggle to fully believe that God loves you, know that His love is not determined by your performance. If you are afraid that something will happen to remove you from God’s love, know that no circumstance can end His love for you.

God’s love is the greatest of the great and strongest of the strong. No one or no thing can ever top this love, so seek God’s love first and allow Him to fill your heart with His wild, unrestrained light. In her song, “Pieces,”Pieces, Amanda Cook beautifully portrays God’s love:

Unreserved, unrestrained

Your love is wild for me

It isn’t shy, it’s unashamed

Your love is proud to be seen with me

Uncontrolled, uncontained

Your love is a fire burning bright for me

It’s not just a spark, it’s not just a flame

Your love is a light, and all the world will see

Reflection Questions:

  1. Is there something in your life that makes you feel disconnected from God’s love?

  2. How can you replace fear with truth that God loves you, no matter what?

So often I feel like I am unworthy of Your love, or that my circumstances hinder Your love for me, but thank You that that is not true. Help me to live in Your perfect love instead of depending on love from other places.
