You Have a Story to Tell

You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. - Matthew 5:13-16

At some point in life, you have probably heard someone ask, “Who wants to share their testimony?” That question used to make me cringe. There are many reasons why people don’t like to share their story, and the reasons usually fall on the spectrum of “my story isn’t cool enough” to “my story has too much baggage.” I have fallen on both ends of the spectrum throughout my life. When I was young, I thought it was lame that I grew up in Church and accepted Jesus at age 9. As I grew older and battled anxiety, I felt ashamed to tell others about how God saved me from a life of perfectionism.

No matter what end of the spectrum you fall on, you are called to share your story. Why? For a pat on the back or to check off the Christian box? No. So that others may see the light that has called you out of darkness. As Matthew 5 puts it, when you light a lamp, you use the light to illuminate something else. You don’t light a lamp and then hide it under a box. God saved you because He loves you, and because He wants you to be a light in the darkness.

God has provided us with the tremendous privilege of being a light to others. The enemy will try and deceive you into thinking your story isn’t worth sharing, but if you have been saved by God, you have an amazing story to tell. You were spiritually DEAD and now you’re spiritually ALIVE. That’s huge! Share your light, and watch as God works in and around you.

P.S: In case you think you’re too young to share your story…

Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity. -1 Timothy 4:12

Reflection:

  1. Is there something holding me back from sharing my story?

  2. How can I tell others about all that God has done for me?

Prayer:

Father, thank You that You saved me and brought me from death to life. Please empower me to share my story so that others may experience the same light that You have given me. Silence the lies that tell me I should remain silent, and provide opportunities to speak of who You are. I love You.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen
