Better Things

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

2 Peter 3:9

Choices. We face hundreds of them in a single day. Will I wake up to my first alarm, or let it snooze? Will I eat that? Will I actually go to class today? Will I date him? Some choices are simple and have little to no effect on you long term, but others, much like where to go to college or who to be friends with, shape the rest of our life.

I heard a quote once that went a little something like this “you are as close to God as you choose to be” (Rick Warren). I quickly jotted it down, and turn back to it often.

I remember the first time I chose the Lord. When a faith that had been passed down to me from my parents, became something I could call my own. When I realized following the Lord would mean more than just going to church every Sunday.

My decision to follow the Lord changed everything. I began to see the world through a different perspective; His perspective. Things that seemed like a big deal, suddenly were put in perspective as I realized what I was put on this Earth to do.

But this decision is not easy. It is something I must choose to do daily. It is an act of surrender. It means saying “no” to some things, but “yes” to better things. It means choosing friends, actions and words carefully. It means being fully aware that I am carrying the Gospel message with me wherever I go.

But this decision has saved my life. It made me fully aware that I am never alone, that Jesus is always with me. He guides my steps, and paves a way for a future. Choosing Jesus gives me purpose and sets me free.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Have you fully decided to choose Christ? If so, what does that look like for you?

  2. What are some things you have had to sacrifice in order to follow Christ?

  3. In what areas in your life have you seen God work as a result of choosing Christ

Jesus, thank you for making Yourself available to choose You. Thank You for pursuing me, wholeheartedly, and captivating me with Your love. I pray that You would increase my desire for You and make following You an easy choice.
