See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. - 1 John 3:1 NIV
We live in a society where perfection is the goal, and where the concept of perfection is always changing. We put so much pressure on ourselves to fit the standards of this world, and are so critical of ourselves when we don’t achieve them. It can be difficult to see ourselves as worthy of love. I have found that often, we are discouraged from being confident and feeling like we belong. This has caused me to question God’s love for me, and if He really sees me as a worthy member of His kingdom.
But God doesn’t see us that way. Unlike the idea of perfection, His love never changes, and our foundation in Christ is solid. We are His children, and He made us in His image. We need to see ourselves the way God sees us, and be who He created us to be. He made us to be loving, kind, and to follow Him every step of the way. He doesn’t expect us to be perfect; in Him we are made whole. He wants to be in relationship with us, and often we forget that. We need to be kinder and more forgiving with ourselves.
I think that the world has become such a selfish place, and we are focused and worried about ourselves. God created us to be in community and to empower each other. He wants to be in relationship with us, but He also wants us to reach out to others. Mark 12:31 says “Love your neighbour as yourself,” but I think it’s easy to forget both loving those around us, as well as loving ourselves. My hope for you is that you realize how God sees you, and that you can spread His love to those around you.
1. In what aspects of your life have you been challenging the way God sees you? (For example, being critical of your appearance or personality.)
2. In what ways can you grow in community and love for others?
Father thank You for creating me and loving me so dearly. Help me to remember that I am worthy of Your love, and that I am a valued daughter in Christ. Fill me up with love that I can give to my neighbours, and help me to see myself the way that You see me.
