He Is Our Helper

In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

- Ephesians 6:16-17

I love this verse and its emphasis on putting on the full armor of God, who is three in one: The Father, Christ the Son, The Holy Spirit. He is our Advocate, Comforter, Counselor, Encourager, Healer, and Helper. It’s truly amazing how God is all of these things and so much more. He has our best interest in mind and when times get tough, He continues to be our three-in-one God, helping us to listen and be encouraged by what the Holy Spirit is teaching us. With the Holy Spirit dwelling in your heart you will have the courage and strength to overcome the trials that come your way.

The Holy Spirit continues to guide me through some really bumpy roads. My current season of being single has not been easy. I have entered the “greater than twenty-five age bracket” and sometimes I feel like I missed out on something. Did God forget about making my plan to be married by my mid-20’s a reality? While I do feel discouraged at times, I also confidently trust that the Holy Spirit continues to encourage me through reading God’s Word, anchoring my hope and trust in His promises and living an abundant life found in Jesus Christ.

Without a doubt in my mind, I believe the Holy Spirit called me to this season to learn some very valuable lessons:

I have developed a deeper relationship with God.

I learned that without God at the center of my relationship, it simply will not sustain life’s curveballs.

I have been able to truly discover my passions in life and use the gifts God gave me for a greater good.

Had I never experienced this season of singleness, I would not have recognized the Holy Spirit guiding me to the path God intended for me all along. Was it my plan to pursue this particular path? No, but sometimes when we find ourselves in seasons of life questioning “why,” we need to refocus the “why” to WHAT the Holy Spirit is trying to teach us.

I encourage you to make room in your heart for our Almighty God. He is there as your Helper. You can count on Him to always have your back. When life doesn’t seem to make sense, feel the power of the Holy Spirit encouraging your heart.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. - 2 Corinthians 13:14

1. What season are you currently struggling with?

2. Make a list of everything you have learned from the Holy Spirit in this challenging time. Now, how can you put those teachings to good use?

Heavenly Father, I pray whatever season I find myself in, I am aware of the incredible ways You are present in my life. I pray whenever I question Your guidance, that I recognize the Holy Spirit dwelling in my heart and the power You have to transform me from discouraged to encouraged by You, Lord. I need you as my Helper and Healer. I love You and it is in Your name I pray, Amen.

Note: I couldn’t help but think of this worship song when writing this devotional as it fits so perfectly with the meaning behind this post.
