Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them.
- 1 Corinthians 7:17
As believers, we are to constantly be pursuing the Lord, no matter what situation of life we are in or what relationship status we have. We learn in Mark 12:30 that the greatest commandment for our lives is to love God with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength. This implies that every situation we are in has the potential for us to love God more deeply and put Christ’s love on display!
While dating, you are given a unique opportunity to spend time with someone and show off that relationship to the world around you. I’m not talking about taking cute pictures to post on Instagram or always having someone to go to your favorite coffee shop with. I’m talking about someone to be set apart from worldly things with, so that non-believers who witness your interactions will question what makes you different.
As Christians, both people involved in the relationship should be desiring to love God more each day. If they are doing this, Christ’s love will overflow from both of them and will be clearly seen in the way they treat each other as children of God. This means that they offer grace and forgiveness when someone makes a mistake, show respect in their words and actions, and encourage each other to seek holiness. These actions display to the world the satisfaction we can only find in a perfect Savior, not the satisfaction we can find in another sinful human being, no matter how good-looking they are.
Another important aspect of dating is seeking wisdom during the process. One way that you can do this is through having honest conversations with women in your life that will hold you accountable to high standards of purity. While these relationships are incredibly helpful and can provide wisdom, the most important thing to do is seek the guidance of God through prayer. Seek His will for whom and how He wants you to date, and make His commandments the highest authority of advice. By doing this, you will not only be asking God for help, but allowing Him to be the center of this relationship.
1. If you are currently in a dating relationship, how can you and your significant other display to the world that you are believers through your interactions? If not, what are some ways that you can show the world that you are a believer through your current situation?
2. Who are some people that you can trust to give you wisdom and accountability while you are dating?
Father, I thank You for the grace that You have offered us so that we may be fully satisfied in You. Thank You for giving me wisdom in scripture about how to live according to Your will, no matter what situation of life I am in. Help me to honor You through my relationships with other people and always put You first. I love You! Amen.
