Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. - Colossians 3:13
When I think about the abundance of grace that was necessary for Christ to forgive me, I am overwhelmed with joy. I am reminded of the depth of punishment that I deserve for my daily mistakes, but I can rejoice in the fact that God chose to give His only Son so that I can be forgiven with a simple, sincere request. This forgiveness that Christ offered me was not just a one time occurrence, either. He continues to forgive me daily as I fail over and over again. With the forgiveness Christ has given me, I am inspired to show the same grace and mercy to the people around me.
In Matthew 18:21-22, Peter asks Jesus how many times we are to forgive those who sin against us. Jesus responds by saying seventy times seven times. He doesn’t say this to set the limit of forgiveness at 490 sins, but to show us that we should forgive freely, an uncountable number of times. Jesus doesn’t just recommend that we forgive others; He is the perfect example for us as we sin against Him daily.
Being reminded of our own helpless state before we asked for forgiveness, we are spurred on to forgive others freely like Christ forgives us. We may think that someone doesn’t deserve our forgiveness, but I am so thankful that Christ doesn’t think that about me. The forgiveness seen in the Gospel is countercultural to how the world handles being wronged, and it puts His life-changing grace on display. The greatest love that I have ever experienced is through the Gospel (story) of Jesus and that is the best love that we can share with those around us. After being forgiven by Christ, we are challenged through His Word to let our actions show the results of His grace without limits.
1. Have you experienced the forgiveness that Christ has offered to give you?
2. How can you offer the grace and forgiveness of Christ to the people in your life that have not yet experienced it?
Father, Thank You for the forgiveness You have given me and the grace You show me daily. Help me to follow Your example by forgiving people in my life freely. I ask that You continue to reveal ways I can glorify You through my relationships by showing others grace. I love You! Amen.
