What Does It Mean to Serve?

...He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

- John 13:4-5 ESV

When someone mentions the word servant, who do you usually think of? Is it a member of your family or a close friend? Is it your mom or dad, or perhaps someone in your church? A servant could be anyone. A servant could be you!

In my family, four out of the five of us are gone from sunup til sundown, typically every single day. Being this busy usually doesn’t leave much time for the others to get the housework done, so this leaves me to do it! I remember a while ago, grumbling to my dad one night over the dirty dishes and the dirty floor, and he told me to remember to be the servant. Remember to put others before myself. Jesus loves this kind of attitude!

Can this servant’s attitude be said of you? Are you the first one to jump up and unload the dishwasher while everyone might still be eating? Do you rush to make the coffee for your mom and dad so it’s ready for them early in the morning? If not, now is the perfect time to start!

I have learned in my own life that serving can be so beneficial and rewarding because serving takes the focus off of me and turns it to others. If you’re in college, you can serve your roommates too! Offer to help clean the room, or do her laundry for her while she studies. Maybe even pray for her.

Serving others might seem weird at first if you’ve never done it. But I encourage you today to try. Someone who does not know Christ might be watching you, which could open the door to the Gospel! So choose today someone you might serve, dear ladies! Serve the Lord! It is so worth it!

1. In what ways can you choose to serve your family or friends?

2. Is there someone in your life you can serve this week? Choose to be a blessing and do so!

Lord, help us to remember Your attitude and example as we serve others. Amen.
