Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)
Around this time of the year, gratitude is often thought about as, “Thank you Jesus for being an awesome provider this year.” This year, as I sought to take my personal relationship with God to another level, I focused on deepening my faith and increasing my prayer life. Within the process of focusing on both prayer and faith, I learned that I had to develop a different attitude about gratitude.
Gratitude is usually one of those things that I would take for granted all year long and truly focus on for the month of November. Yes, I praise and worship God during my daily praise and worship moments and Sundays, but what I learned is that I am to truly give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
This means that I must give thanks in ALL things. Not just in some things. Not just when I feel like being grateful. Give God thanks for the good, the bad, and the ugly. This means give God thanks for the good days and the bad days. This means give God thanks for the answered prayers and the unanswered prayers. This means give God thanks for it ALL. Don’t worry, my sweet sisters. This continues to be a struggle for me as well, although I am growing in this area.
But it is truly all about changing our perspective of each situation. Although all situations may not seem all that great at first, be grateful anyway, because we win through Christ in the end!
Be grateful because our good God, with good plans, has our back, no matter what is going on our lives!
But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 1 Corinthians 15:57 (NIV)
1. Have you been grateful in all things lately?
2. How can you work to shift to change your perspective to be grateful in all circumstances?
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your loving kindness that You bestow on us each day. Forgive us for our lack of gratitude. Father, we are truly grateful to You for all that You do for us daily, and we will do our best to work on being grateful in all circumstances. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
