“But why did you need to search?” He asked. “Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?” But they didn’t understand what he meant.
- Luke 2:49-50 (NLT)
As I started to settle to into my Christian life, I was told that part of my role as a Christian was to spread the good news about God’s love and grace. Initially, I did not quite understand how I was supposed to do that.
In the opening Scripture, Jesus’ parents were searching for Him. He was later found in a temple sitting among teachers and asking questions. When His parents found Him and questioned Him, Jesus responded to his parents by saying,“But why did you need to search?” He asked. “Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?” But they didn’t understand what he meant (Luke 2:49-50 NLT).
As a young boy, Jesus was teaching and speaking the Word of God. Jesus did not tell His parents that he had to do His Father’s business. Jesus did not ask permission to spend time with teachers. At a young age, Jesus understood that God was in control of His life. Jesus was clearly aware that teaching and spreading the message would be central to His ministry.
Jesus demonstrated what it means to be about our Father’s business (spreading the message of God’s love and grace). Jesus teaching and speaking at a young age implies that we do not have to be fully mature of have it all it all figured out to spread the message of God’s love and grace.
As I grow in my Christian journey, I am learning more about my responsibility to spread the message of God’s love and grace to others. One way for me to do that is not only through words, but through my actions. That way I too can be more like Jesus and be about my Father’s business.
1. What is one action that you can take this month to spread the message about God’s love and grace?
2. How can you use your words to spread God's love and grace this month?
Thank You for all that You have done for us. Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to be a great example to us. Father, we pray that You continue to bless us as we go out and spread the message about Your love and grace to others through both words and actions. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
