Can you discover the depths of God? Can you discover the limits of the Almighty? - Job 11:7
I don’t know about you, but there have been many times in my life when I thought I knew everything there was to know about Jesus. Maybe it was in the midst of a season in my life where I started to believe I had it figured out, that I was finally becoming a “good Christian.” However, it’s quickly after that I get humbled before the Lord, realizing just how much I still don’t know about Him.
This happened to people in the Bible, too. It was three days after the crucifixion, and some followers of Jesus were walking and talking about everything that had happened. They spoke to a man about who Jesus was and explained that they truly believed He was going to be the one to save the world. What they didn’t realize was that the man they were speaking to about Jesus, was Jesus himself. They were immediately humbled before Him. They spent the rest of the day with Him, and the Bible says that their hearts were “burning” as they learned from Him. (Luke 24:13-35).
I relate to those people. I too have missed Jesus altogether, while trying my hardest to “figure Him out.” I rely on my own strength and mortal mind to comprehend just who He is, when in reality, I was never meant to figure Him out, I was created to be with Him. I forget that Jesus didn’t save me so that I could become confident in my own strength and knowledge of Biblical principles; He saved me so that I could spend my lifetime getting small glimpses of just how good He is.
We were never meant to have it all figured out. We were never supposed to do it on our own. The Lord desires for us to come to know Him by fellowshipping (spending time) with Him through prayer, community, and reading His Word. It is by these things that we may come to know Him and grow in our relationship with Him. I pray today that Jesus gives you a fresh glimpse of His character and graciously reminds you that you still don’t have Him figured out.
1. Can you think of a time when you felt confident that you had Jesus completely figured out?
2. How did the Lord prove you wrong? What knowledge of Him did you gain from that?
3. What areas in your life can you pray and ask for the Lord to reveal a new part of Himself to you in?
Lord, thank You for being with us. Thank You for being gracious and merciful to correct us, humble us, and draw us closer to You. Help us to understand that we are not supposed to have You or this life completely figured out. Help us to remember that it is through relationship with You that we are able to learn more about You. We love You, Lord.
