It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going. - Hebrews 11:8
I believe sometimes we don’t truly value or understand the importance of faith until it’s tested. Or even the wisdom we can glean from it when and if He asks us to wait.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
- Hebrews 11:1
When I read this verse, I always look back to the faith of Abraham and how his faith was tested (Check out Genesis 12-25 for the story of Abraham). Twenty-five years is a long time to wait. But he persevered. God promised, and He delivered.
We all go through seasons of life where we need to wait on God or simply lean on Him during a difficult time. But our God is good. He’s a loving Father who knows best. Maybe it isn’t always rough as our minds make it out to be. Running the race. Trusting in the Lord.
I’m in my own season of waiting right now. It’s been four years now. I should have filled journals. Maybe talked more about my faith journey. So much I’ve learned! Mountains and leaps. Storms and rainbows. Every mile, every tear. He was there through it all. I think that’s part of the reason why God waits so long to answer every heart desire we’ve ever had, and perhaps why He waited so long to deliver Isaac to Abraham and Sarah. It’s not about the promise. It’s what and who we become while waiting for the promise.
Abraham was a man of faith. We all know that. Unwavering. A hallmark. Someone I strive to be like. One of the guys you’ll see me talking to for hours on end when we all reach Heaven some day. So let’s be women of faith who trust God in the thick of it all like Abraham did. God always knows what He’s doing.
1. In what ways can you put your trust in Christ during a season when it seems like faith is bleak, or even unreasonable?
2. Are you willing to trust God even if things don't go according to your timetable?
Jesus, You are in control of every aspect of my life! Help me to trust You and have faith in Your plan even when I don’t understand. Amen.
