A Battle of the Heart

A Battle of the Heart

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. - ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:10‬ ‭NLT‬‬

It’s really easy to get lost in the world of whatever we spend the most time doing. Without knowing it, we put a label on ourselves. And if that wasn’t bad enough, we also have others putting labels on us too. Labels are usually a reflection of how we view ourselves. It can be a simple title such as student, daughter, girlfriend, roommate, sorority sister, or best friend. Engaged, married, or divorced. It can also be the negative self-talk we battle. Smart or not smart enough. Beautiful or ugly. Too skinny or overweight. Not good enough.

Oftentimes, we can even fall victim to our circumstances. As a daily reminder, I wrote one of my favorite verses down and put it in a place where I can read it every single day. It reads:

Actually, I don’t have a sense of needing anything personally. I’ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I’m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I’ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am. - ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:12 MSG‬‬

I can’t be the only one that battles putting labels on myself or allowing my circumstances to dictate who I am. During my teenage years, the label I was putting on myself was “not good enough.” Telling myself that lie over and over again resulted in me having an eating disorder for many years. When we don’t understand the way God views us, we begin to believe the lies that are shouting in our minds. We must not give satan access to our heart or our mind. We must guard ourselves with God’s truth. One of the ways we can do that is by reading the Bible. Doing so will also help us to understand the way God views us.

The reality of our problem is that our identity is a battle of the heart.

The Bible is clear. Jeremiah 17:9 reads: The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. We are all corrupted to the core and in need of Jesus. And, Jesus is the reason I have hope.

I absolutely love how Ephesians 3:17-19 tells us...t

Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

So girl, you better recognize! You’re a daughter of the one true King: Christ Jesus.

Ya hear me? You’re a CHILD OF GOD!!! I want you to shout that from the rooftops until you believe it.

May we be women that never doubt our identities again. May our roots be so intricately woven in God’s love that the devil has no room to plant his seeds. To God be all the glory!

1. What is one of the labels that you’ve put on yourself?

2. What labels has God put on you?

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for creating me in Your image. Thank You for this beautiful life You’ve gifted me. When I begin to doubt or forget who I am, please remind me of who I am in You alone. Help me to guard my heart and fill it only with Your truths. In Your mighty name I pray, Amen.
