God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen. - 1 Peter 4:10-11 NLT
Sometimes it’s hard to be me. I have fears and habits and to-do lists that just make some days feel long. I struggle with anxiety, I am extremely sensitive to others’ feelings and opinions, and I have a perfectionistic heart that so often won’t stop striving. But I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. I’m guessing that sometimes it feels hard to be you, too.
But you know what else I’ve come to learn? God made me, anxious heart and all. And it wasn’t by accident. In fact, Psalm 139 verses 13-16 tell us that He made each one of us carefully and wonderfully.
Even more, when God makes us brand new creations as we become believers in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), He redeems everything about us, bringing goodness and light and truth and peace to every part of us, including the things that make it “hard to be us” or make us wish we had someone else’s gifts and talents to use instead. God fills us with His Spirit, transforms us, and gives us spiritual gifts to use for His glory - to do the things He calls us to, that He created us for and laid out specifically for us before we ever knew Him:
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. - Ephesians 2:10
1. Do you find yourself wishing you had others’ spiritual gifts or personality traits instead of the ones God has given you?
2. How have you seen God transform parts of you - struggles, insecurities, natural tendencies - to use for His glory?
3. Are you using your gifts to glorify God through Jesus by obeying Him and serving others?
God, thank You for creating me, and for making me a new creation in Christ so I can love You and do what You call me to. Forgive me for the times when I wish away the personality traits You’ve given me, when I wish I had someone else’s spiritual gifts, and when I don’t surrender my insecurities and struggles to You. Thank You for giving me spiritual gifts unique to the way You call me to serve You. Show me how You want me to use these gifts, and help me to do so in ways that put the spotlight on You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
