For freedom, Christ set us free. Stand firm then and don’t submit again to a yoke of slavery. - Galatians 5:1
Comparison is such an ugly beast. It takes hold of us and brings out the worst parts of humanity within us, such as envy, jealousy, and pride. It tells us that we are something that we are not and causes us to ultimately lessen the marvelous, magnificent creation that we are in Christ.
I have been struggling with the idea of comparison for all of my adult life. I have often asked God, “Why didn’t you give me that talent?” or “Why didn’t you make me more like that?” But the truth is that, because I was too focused on the lives of others around me, I was failing to take advantage of my own gifts from God. And that’s exactly what comparison does…it robs us of our desire to make use of what we have because it forces us to focus on what we don’t have instead.
So, how do we keep ourselves from falling into the trap of comparison? We remind ourselves who we are in Christ! The truth is that God created us so intentionally. He gave us each unique traits and gifts and calls us to celebrate those differences as one united body of Christ. When we fail to acknowledge how magnificently unique and capable we are in Christ, we tell God that His work was not good enough, that we’d rather do it on our own
It is so true that Christ set us free from a life of constantly having to strive to be better, to be perfect. He set us free to live a life of purpose knowing that our battle is not against one another and that the prize has already been won… we are His! Even when it’s hard, focus on those truths and don’t allow yourself to go down the path of comparison.
1. What areas in your life are you comparing to others around you?
2. How can you begin to live a life of freedom in Christ in those areas?
God, reveal to me today the areas of my life that I am not focusing on my identity in You. Show me the areas of comparison that I need to instead trade for a life of freedom. Help me to realize my full potential in You and draw my attention away from those toxic thoughts of comparison. Thank You for Your dedication and love. Amen
