There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.
- Ecclesiastes 3:1
“Timing is everything…” “God’s timing is perfect…” “It’ll all happen in due time…” These cliché phrases echoed through my brain as I held the rejection letter in my hand. Mascara stained tears ran down my cheeks and onto the paper that held the fate of my college years. The one thing in my life I was really sure of, the one thing I had worked hardest for, the one thing that consumed all of my thoughts: the nursing program. There was a list of admitted students somewhere inside the College of Nursing, and this year my name wasn’t on it.That simple thought was enough to break my heart. And it did.
My mother’s arms held my seemingly numb body together and brushed back strands of hair from my eyes. She whispered in my ear, “Erin, I don’t know why God is asking you to wait right now, and it breaks my heart, too, but I know in time you’ll see exactly why.” In that moment I made a decision, I chose to believe her. I chose to hold on to my faith, my history with the Lord, and declare over myself that He was still good…even if in that moment I thought His timing really sucked.
Timing is something that I wrestle with the most with God. Sometimes I don’t understand why something had to happen when it did or why it didn’t happen when it should have. I question His goodness and I shake my fist at Heaven in my moments of despair, my mortal mind unable to see the plan unfolding like He does.
Do you wrestle with God’s timing, too? Is there a job you are waiting on, a relationship you were really banking on happening by now? I bet you, too, have shouted at the ceiling, questioning “when” and “why?”
But Jesus is the author of time. Before you were born, your days were laid out in front of Him. He sees what your todays hold and what your tomorrows will bring. He brings everything to pass at the exact moment it should and nothing slips past His line of vision. Find rest in that truth today.
1. What are you waiting on in this season?
2. Have you fully surrendered this area or thing to God?
3. What would it look like if you completely trusted God with the timeline of your life?
Father, I thank You that You are the author of time. I praise you that before I was born, You knew exactly what my life would entail. Help me to trust You with my hopes and dreams, and to know that Your timing is perfect. Amen.
