Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take. - Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT
You are probably hearing the words change and transitions a lot right now. As the kids are going back to school, the seasons are going to start changing soon and most of our lives are going through a transitional stage. Some of us are okay with change but some of us do not take well to any transition in our lives. Maybe you have had the same hair color and cut for years because your scared of how you will look and what people will say if it’s not the right look for you, or maybe you’re moving to a new city or even state for a new job or career and it’s the biggest transition in your life because this is your first time out on your own. I understand exactly how it feels to fear change.
I grew up suffering with anxiety, and even hearing the the idea of change freaked me out. God, so merciful, faithful, and loving healed me from anxiety right before this big move in my life. Of course the enemy doesn’t want to give up. During the worst time to have anxiety, the enemy TRIED to bring it back up in my life. I guess he forgot he was already defeated because yes, to be honest, it was tough. BUT GOD!
I moved from Texas to Oklahoma, 8 hours away from home. For the first time in my life I was separated from my family. You would think that going to a Bible college, I would feel more comfortable with this transition. Instead I felt as if everyone at school would judge me or criticize me. I felt scared and unsure if I really heard God about moving here. The first day I moved into my apartment, I cried. The fear, anxiety, worry, and loneliness started to entangle my mind. I had to think back on how I overcame anxiety and all these thoughts last time. Because if He did it once, He will do it again. He is the same God yesterday, today, and forever. The verse in Proverbs 3 immediately came to my mind,
Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. - Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT
This verse, word for word, changes my life. That’s the type of change I actually do like and need in my life. It says to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart”, not half-heartedly, not just when you feel like it and not just when everything is going perfect. We are to trust Him, that means you need to get to know your Father. You don’t typically trust someone you don’t know. Second it says, “do not depend on your own understanding,” because Lord knows we do not understand everything. Good thing we don’t have to understand everything, we just have to “Seek His will in all we do.” Get into the Word daily, seek Him wholeheartedly. Feed yourselves with the Word of God and, “He will show you which path to take.” That’s where anxiety comes from, the fear of the unknown. When you know that your path is in His hands and that He will show it to you as you seek Him, you will no longer dislike transition. Instead you will be excited for the next thing God has in store for you.
1. Are you going through a season of change or transition? Think about a few things that you might be trying to figure out in your own understanding. Let go of that frustration by simply trusting that it’s in God’s hands.
2. Have you been experiencing anxiety or any type of fear? Have you been getting feeding those thoughts more than you have been feeding yourself with the Word of God? Make a list of truths from His Word to battle the thoughts that lie to you from a place of fear.
Father God, I want to thank You so much for being there all along. Thank You for never leaving us even though we can get frustrated at times. Thank You for being an understanding Father when we are trying to figure life out on our own. Thank You for having such an amazing path for me. Father, I want to trust You more. Help me to not lean on my own understanding but in all my ways acknowledge You. Help me to see You in every situation. As I seek You, Lord, reveal to me the path You have for me. Give me strength to have faith every step of the way. Thank You Lord for making my path straight.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
