Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from Him. - Psalm 62:1
There is nothing I love more than a schedule. I love following rules and staying organized, but when it comes to spending time with God, keeping up with habits is something I struggle with. I am so easily distracted, that sometimes when I try and sit down to spend time with God I can’t get focussed, and I move on to things I think are more important.
The truth is, there really isn’t anything more important than my relationship with God. I love spending time with Him, so lately I’ve been making that a priority. I find that the more time I intentionally spend with Him, the more peace and joy I feel, and I grow deeper in my relationship with Him. This realization has made me want to form a daily routine, because my actions should reflect my feelings towards Him.
It can feel daunting to set up a routine with God. To make it more manageable, I like to set small goals for myself. When I find my mind wandering at school or work, I pray instead of daydreaming. When I get home, at the end of the day, I spend some time prayer journalling or doing a devotional before I watch Netflix. The more I invest into these routines, the more they become habits that are apart of my daily life.
It has been difficult for me to break habits that put other things before my relationship with God. I have often valued relaxing over growing in my faith. But what I have learned is that spending time with Him gives me more rest than I could receive doing anything else. I really like Exodus 23:12 which says “The Lord replied, My presence will go with you, and I will give You rest.” This just reminds me that wherever I go, He is with me, and He is what I should turn to first.
I also think it’s important to have a community to encourage you in your walk with God. My friends often ask how my relationship with God is doing, or how I’m spending time Him with that week. I learn so much by listening to other people’s routines; they give me creative ideas to implement into my life. Sharing your routines and habits with someone can also hold you accountable. My best friend will often call out things in my life that I need to change to be pleasing to the Lord. This has been so helpful to guide in seeing areas where I need growth. This week I would encourage you to take a look at your routine and see what you can do to grow in your faith!

Dear God, thank You so much for your ever-present love for me. Help me to grow in my relationship with You. Show me habits that are not helpful, and guide me in the right direction. Give me rest as I come to You, God, fill up my heart with joy and peace. Thank You for everything You have done in my life.
