If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
- Romans 10:9
It’s easy, I think, to assume that because we have heard Jesus’ name at least once, went to that one church camp when we were young, or even grew up in church, we truly know Jesus. But doing those things, though probably influential in your walk as a Christian, doesn’t necessarily mean that you truly know Jesus.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines “know” as: to have understanding of; to be aware of the truth or factuality of.
Truly knowing Jesus is more than just speaking His name or even doing “good” in attempts to please Him. The Bible puts it like this: “‘Knowing the correct password - saying ‘Master, Master,’ for instance - isn’t going to get you anywhere with me. What is required is serious obedience - doing what my Father wills. I can see it now - at the Final Judgment thousands strutting up to me and saying, ‘Master, we preached the Message, we bashed the demons, our God-sponsored projects had everyone talking.’ And do you know what I am going to say? ‘You missed the boat. All you did was use me to make yourselves important. You don’t impress me one bit. You’re out of here.’” - Matthew 7:21-23 (MSG).
Growing up, I went to Mass with my family every week, attended a private Catholic school, and knew what Jesus had done in order to save me from myself. What I didn’t know was that I didn’t have to constantly work to prove that I was good enough for Jesus to love me. I spent years of my life longing to truly know Jesus (though, admittedly, it took me a long time to figure that out). In doing that, I strived to be the “perfect” Christian and almost ran myself into the ground. Luckily, God’s plan is perfect and I was able to truly meet His Son, Jesus, and have been loving the fact that I know Him ever since.
And coming into a relationship with Jesus is so easy! Just like our verse for today says:
If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.- Romans 10:9
1. What does it mean for you to truly know Jesus?
2. What is one step you can take this week to get to know more of who Jesus is?
Jesus, thank You for the ways that I get to experience You. Thank You for revealing Your character to me and for not hiding Yourself from me. I ask that You show me more of who You are this week. I love You, Jesus. Amen.
