Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. - 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NLT)
Expressing gratitude when times are good is easy. But, what is like to express gratitude during hard times? Expressing gratitude during tests, trials, and unfortunate circumstances is just as important as expressing gratitude during the good times.
At the beginning of the year, I took a huge leap of faith to work on a project that was important to me. I thought that this project would change the course of my life. Well, I was in for a rude awakening. The project was unsuccessful. I lost a lot, including both time and money. I was crushed and felt defeated for months. But each day, although feeling crushed and defeated, I had to remember that God still has His hands in the situation. The Bible reassures me that my faith grows stronger during trials.
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. James 1:2-3 (ESV)
I made a choice to praise God and give thanks each day, even the days I did not like being grateful and felt most defeated. Although I am continuing to recover from the unsuccessful project, I continue to be grateful. Knowing that God is working ALL things out for my good, I will continue to express my gratitude and praise to God, despite what I am going through.
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 (ESV)
Sweet sisters, trials, disappointments, hurts, and tests will always be a part of our lives. But, we can rest assure that God has His hands on all our circumstances and situations. Count it all joy! Be grateful! Continue to praise His holy name, for God is there with us through it ALL!
1. Think about the last time you expressed gratitude to God. Was it during good times or tough times?
2. How can you start or continue to express gratitude in all circumstances?
Father, today I want to express my gratitude by simply saying thank You. Thank You for it all in my life, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Your Word says to be thankful in all circumstances. Father, please forgive me for the times that I have not been grateful. Help to me to remember that You are working ALL things out for my good, and for that I am forever grateful. Thank You for my life and the life of those You placed in my life. Help me to continue to move forward each day with gratitude and praise. In Jesus’ name. Amen
