Taking Time to Rest After Busy Seasons

Then Jesus said, ‘Come to Me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you. Let Me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.

- Matthew 11:28-30

I’ve never been good at resting.

Overachieving? Rushing from one big task to the next? Jumping from one experience to another? Yes, those things I’m good at doing. And burning myself out? Yep, that is something I’m more familiar with than I would like.

When I was eighteen, I published my first book. The months leading up to release day were filled with hours of formatting, editing, and promotion. By the time release day came, I was exhausted emotionally and ready to celebrate.

So I did celebrate.

For about a day.

After that I started feeling anxious to get something else going. “Okay, time for the next big project,” I told myself as I rushed towards what came next.

But I was burning myself out faster than I could ever have imagined.

I became easily agitated and stressed out. I had just come out of a busy, exciting time as an author and instead of preparing for the next season with rest, I charged straight ahead. I became worn out quickly. Writer’s block became a real struggle because I was just too stressed out by my own expectations of myself.

I felt that I had to keep going. I had to keep rushing from one busy season to the next to make my life matter. I had to constantly be doing.

But Jesus never told me that at all.

Come to Me, He whispers. Come to Me...and rest.

It is a choice to rest and go to Him. Life is busy and life is crazy, this much I know. It’s easy for me to experience one big event and rush right on to the next.

But in the end I’m hurting myself.

Can you relate? Maybe you too have just come out of a busy season of life. Maybe you walked through a big holiday or event that you’d been preparing for and now it’s over.

Won’t you choose to make intentional time for rest now, instead of rushing ahead to the next thing?

He doesn’t call us to rushing. He calls us to resting.

Let’s go to Him and spend time in His Word, learning more about who He is. Let’s refresh ourselves in Him and become energized and ready to serve Him more. Let’s take time to reflect on His faithfulness throughout the busy season we’ve left behind and all the amazing things He’s done. Don’t underestimate the power in reflecting back on what He’s brought you through.

His yoke is easy and He wants to give you rest.

Choose that today.

1. Name a busy season of life or big event that you have recently walked through. What were some ways that God proved Himself faithful to you through that time?

2. What is one way that you can actively choose to rest this week? Maybe that’s by setting aside an extra hour a day for your quiet time, spending time alone outside, going on a girl’s day, whatever rest looks like for you.

3. What is one Bible verse on rest that you can memorize today to help remind yourself of the importance of rest after busy times?

Dear Jesus, thank You that You offer me rest. Thank You that you don’t expect me to keep rushing around and doing for You, because You enjoy just being with me. Please, help me to come and just rest with You today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
