One night Joseph had a dream, and when he told his brothers about it, they hated him more than ever. “Listen to this dream,” he said. “We were out in the field, tying up bundles of grain. Suddenly my bundle stood up, and your bundles all gathered around and bowed low before mine!” His brothers responded, “So you think you will be our king, do you? Do you actually think you will reign over us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dreams and the way he talked about them. - Genesis 37:5-8 NLT
As we head into this New Year we are focusing on new beginnings. The Story of Joseph in Genesis first came to mind when I was preparing this devotion.
His story was one of the first stories I watched after I was saved. I fell in love with his character, determination, honor, integrity, humility and truthfulness. Even though his brothers caused him a lot of grief, he learned to persevere, always following God’s ways. It looks really bleak for Joseph when he is sold into slavery but God had a plan. The man who bought Joseph, Potiphar, saw the potential in Joseph and began giving him more responsibility and stature.
And so begins Joseph’s new beginning. It turns out that Joseph actually is given authority and just at the right time. There is a famine and his family who condemned him becomes hungry and they come to Egypt for food. Joseph’s dream comes true and his brothers, not knowing who he is, bow down to him asking for food. My favorite part is when Joseph reveals himself to them and he says, ”What you meant for evil, God meant for good.”
Sometimes new beginnings can be scary, sad, lonely or confusing. But if we remember that God works everything out for our good, we can rest easy. Trust Him, do the next thing He is telling you to do. Remember God takes the low and eventually puts them high. We have to be trusted with the small things to be given bigger things. Joseph was trustworthy, even when he was tempted, he didn’t waver. He stayed the course and look how his new beginning turned into a legacy for him.
1. Are you in a season right now of new beginnings? What can you trust God for in your life today?
2. Looking at the character traits of Joseph, which one would you like to see in yourself? Focus on that one today.
3. What is God trying to reveal to you to start a new beginning?
Thank You for new beginnings! I thank You, Lord that I can start over when I have lost my way. I am grateful to you for Your direction, in leading me to the life You have prepared. As I go into this day strengthen in me those traits that Joseph had. Let others be drawn to You through me today. Amen.
