A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.
- Proverbs 14:30
It’s around that time of year where it seems like everyone is either in a relationship or is getting engaged. If you’re single, it can feel incredibly isolating and discouraging. I can so relate to the immense joy you might have for your friends or family, but be struggling with feelings of emptiness or even jealousy.
It’s easy to get caught up in your own situation, wondering if God will ever bring someone to you. I know that in my life, I spent way too much time worrying about myself, instead of finding happiness in what I already have. When I do this, I find myself comparing my life to others, and ultimately developing feelings of bitterness. If we let it fester, envy and bitterness can become idols in our lives. It can lead us to believe that being in a romantic relationship is the most important thing we could ever have. That takes us away from God, and He is all we will ever need.
One person’s happiness doesn’t mean that you won’t ever have the same experience. It doesn’t mean that you are a failure, or that your dreams will never come true. I think that it is important to celebrate with others and share in their joy. It’s harder to feel envy when you are truly happy for someone else. A verse that comes to mind is 1 Corinthians 13:4, which says “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” I think that this really highlights the importance of loving others, even if we are struggling with our own jealousy and insecurities. I encourage you to focus on building others up, instead of resenting them for having what you want. Celebrate new engagements and relationships, be there for your friends as they enter into new seasons of life!
1. In what parts of your life are you feeling bitterness or envy? Pray, and ask God to soften your heart in those areas.
2. How can you celebrate people in your life who are in different stages?
Dear God, thank You so much for all You have given me. Thank You for the plan You have for my life. Help me to control my feelings of bitterness and jealousy. Help me to see the importance of celebrating and feeling joyful for others. Help me to be there for my loved ones, and support them through exciting changes. God, I ask that You help me to be content with what I have and remind me that You are all that I need. Amen.
