Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast,
it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self seeking,
it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
- 1 Corinthians 13:4-5
I have been married for 23 years and the most important lesson I have learned being married is about love. When we first got married I wasn’t putting Jesus first. We went through some hardships and I thought our marriage was going to end…...but God. He saved us! I began learning what love really means. My husband and I wanted to love each other unconditionally, like Jesus loves us. We focused on what the “love verse” says in the Bible. We discovered that in order to live out our marriage mission together we would have to put Jesus at the center and learn to forgive, keep communication open, and choose to love in times that maybe we don’t “feel” like it.
I recently saw on Pureflix a show called The Encounter, and they were talking about marriage and how to make it last. I loved what the husband said. He said, “You provide the flame and God is the oxygen.” God is what keeps a marriage alive! The passion you feel in the beginning can slowly die out but if Jesus is your center, He will provide the oxygen to keep the embers aflame. I have also found that prayer about your marriage is essential. If something isn’t going the way you would like or you aren’t “feeling” it, pray about it. I have been so amazed at how God can give you desire when you ask Him to. He can change situations. If both people are willing to put their all into the marriage, nothing can put out the flame!
1. If you’re married, what can you do today to show your spouse that you love him? If you’re not married, how can you show someone Godly love today?
2. If you haven’t already, say you’re sorry and forget about it! Remember love keeps no record of wrongs!
3. Do something to ignite a spark in your relationship today!
Prayer For The Married
God, please show me where I can improve on loving my spouse. Help me get past any difficulties that may be hindering our relationship. Help me to love unconditionally just as Jesus has loved me. Amen.
Prayer For The Unmarried
God, I know You know the plan for my life and I trust that You will lead me to the man of God that You would like me to spend my destiny with. Waiting is so hard, but I know that my future spouse is worth the wait! Thank You for sending me the one who will love me and I will love him the way that a man and woman of God should love one another. Thank You for giving us guidelines in the Bible for a successful marriage, Amen.
