He Holds Your One True Name

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”

- Romans 8:14-15

Unwanted. Unloved. Never enough. Overweight. Average. These are all false labels I have believed. Labels that the world has put on me and maybe you, too. We all have them. Our identity gets lost in these labels, clouding who we are instead of who God says that we are. We learn to live up to these earthly labels instead of the ones that we were made for. My identity has probably been one of the biggest struggles in my life. For years I have been listening to the lies of the world and letting my insecurities get the best of me. Living this life was exhausting. Trying to live up to the labels that the world had for me made me feel so lost; I knew the truth, but believing it was another story.

As a Christian, at the heart of what it means to follow Jesus is to be given a new identity. However I’ve learned that knowing that my identity is in Christ is one thing, but recognizing how that practically changes my life is another. We have to drown out the false identities the enemy tries to push unto us, not falling into the trap of putting our purpose into temporary labels here on Earth. Our worth is so much more than anything we can ever find here on earth.

Here are 3 things that I remind myself daily about who I am that I hope encourage you and remind you of who you TRULY are.

God formed you with His own hands, as His masterpiece.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. - Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)

We don’t have to earn God’s love, but He gives it freely. He loves unconditionally despite the things we have done and the places we have been.

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. - 1 John 4:9-10 (NIV)

When God saved us, He didn’t just save us to leave us as orphans, but instead he made us a part of His family. He sees our hearts and calls us daughters, chosen, beloved, and holy.

Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir. - Galatians 4:7 (NLT)

Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. - Ephesians 1:4 (NLT)

So in those moments of struggle and believing what the world says about you and what you say about yourself, start believing these things.

The Lord of all creation wants You.

He made you.

He loves you.

And He holds your one true name.

1. What are the labels I believe about myself and that have been given to me by the world? Write them down, reflect on how they make you feel, and then shred that paper, giving those labels to God because you have a NEW IDENTITY.

2. What can you do to stop believing the lies and start listening to who God says you are?3. Which truth above do you relate to the most? Which verse do you need to write down and put somewhere you can see it to remember who you are in Christ?

Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing me, for calling me Your beloved, Your child. I ask that You would help me to start seeing myself the way You see me. That I would remember, day after day, who I am in You, that I may better serve You. I want to love others the way You do and I can’t truly do that until I love who You made me to be. Help me to do that.

I love You
