Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.
- Jeremiah 29:12
The phrase “prayer is powerful” is often used when talking about faith, but what does that really mean? I know that in my life, I have struggled to comprehend that God really hears my prayers to Him. I think that a lot of this is based on the thought that I deserve exactly what I’m asking for. I recently have recognized a lot of pride in my life, thinking that my plans and ideas for my life are better than what God has in store for me. Control can easily become an idol in our lives if we don’t fully and completely give up our lives to Him.
We often hear stories of incredible miracles occurring because of God and powerful prayers. These are all amazing gifts from Him, but sometimes it makes me feel like my prayers are insignificant. That lie has prevented me from coming to Jesus with many things, thinking that they weren’t big enough for Him. Recently, I’ve really struggled with coming to God for healing from immense anxiety and stress. I have this idea that I can do it all on my own, and that I shouldn’t be wasting my prayers on this when God has way more important prayers to be listening to. I’m realizing now that this couldn’t be further from the truth.
One verse that I have been clinging to is Philippians 4:6, which says, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” This verse is a great reminder that all our prayers have value, and God wants to hear all of them.
Even though it can be challenging and even intimidating to believe that God actually listens to our prayers, I find it so comforting to know that He is present. I love that we don’t have to wish for things to come true in our lives because we have God. Even if our prayers don’t get answered as we expect, God always has a response. It may not be immediate, or even one we want to hear, but God is still there. One verse that I think really speaks to this is 1 John 5:14, which says, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” This can reassure us that when we cry out to Him, He is there. When we are seeking His comfort, He is present. When we are feeling joyful, He wants to celebrate with us. Our God is constant, loving, and will never forsake us.
1. How is your prayer life? Are you trusting God with your deepest desires?
2. What are some instances of prayer being powerful in your life?
3. What are some prayers you are afraid of bringing to God?
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You so much for listening to my prayers. Help me to remember the power that they have because You hear them. God, I trust You with my life and my prayers. Help me to put my faith in You. Give me patience and an understanding that Your plan for my life is better than I could imagine. Thank You for Your constant presence, and for Your promise that You will never leave me. Amen.
