The New Has Come

I will also sprinkle clean water on you and you will be clean.

I will cleanse you from all your impurities and all your idols.

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you;

I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

- Ezekiel 36:25-26

First of all… AMEN! Those words should be so encouraging to us! God is promising His people that He will cleanse them and remove their hearts of stone and replace them with a new heart instead. He is promising to rid them of their old spirits of idolatry and rebellion and give them a new spirit instead.

Before I met Christ, this concept was not something that I had ever heard about. God Himself giving me a new heart and a new spirit? In my mind, that was something that I had to work for… that I had to earn. And I believe it is that way for a lot of people, and that maybe… that’s something holding them back from fully surrendering to Christ. The thought that you would have to live up to some kind of standard in order to “earn” a new spirit through Christ can be overwhelming. Because the truth is that we could never live up to that standard.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come! - 2 Corinthians 5:17

But here’s the beauty, God doesn’t ask us to live up to those standards! Instead, the new creation that we become when we accept Christ… it’s given freely! Not out of anything that we could have done to supernaturally change ourselves, but out of the overwhelming grace of God through Christ instead. God Himself does the changing, He does the reconciling, and all we have to do is accept it. All we have to do is truly live as if we believed that we were new creations. All we have to do is refuse to be burdened by this idea of some unattainable goal or finish line, and live in the victory that comes from the fact that Christ has already accomplished it!

As Spring begins, I want this to be my mantra. I want to live as if I am truly a new creation in Christ. I want to move on from the past, be present in the moment that God is giving me, and be so humbled in gratitude toward a God that went to such great lengths to reconcile me to Him and to give me a new heart and a new spirit. That’s what it’s all about, friends. It’s about His sacrifice to reconcile us back to Himself. And if we live each day in light of that amazing sacrifice, acknowledging His grace and His mercy, living as new creations… could you imagine that impact we could make for His kingdom?

1. Are you living each day as if you are truly a new creation in Christ or are you allowing yourself be to stuck in the past?

2. Is there someone you know that could benefit from this wildly awe-inspiring truth today? How will you share it with them?

God, thank You so much for your abundant grace and mercy! Thank You that through You, I am a new creation entirely, putting off my old self and stepping into my future with You. Help me to live each day knowing that I am a new creation in You and help me to radiate that joy and hope to those around me. I love You and I am so grateful for Your sacrifice. Amen.
