Not Just Knowledge, but "Know How"

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God,

who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

- James 1:5 NIV

A quote from A. W. Tozer says, “ Wisdom is not just knowledge but “know how.” Wisdom sees beginning to end. Wisdom sees everything in focus.”

This quote wraps up who God is. He gives us “know how” through our gifts. Sometimes people just know how to do things that we can’t do but we can do other things they can’t do. God gives us all different gifts that work together. He has already foreseen everything from beginning to end. He has it all planned perfectly. We need to ask Him for His wisdom so that we can see His plan for our lives in focus.

I watched a movie long ago starring Demi Moore called Wisdom. This movie is a good example of what wisdom is. The movie is about her boyfriend thinking about doing something wrong. He plays it out in his mind but the viewer thinks it’s really happening. When everything turns out really bad with Demi dying, it then goes back to him just thinking about it. It all never happened. Wisdom sees beginning to end and chooses what is good and right. He decides it isn’t good and doesn’t follow through with it; that’s wisdom.

One year I was doing a devotion for Easter. When I got to the end of it I realized there is a difference between head knowledge and heart knowledge. Something can be known as head knowledge but it doesn’t become real and alive until it makes the transfer to heart knowledge. When it does make the transfer, that’s when we have “aha” moments.

Knowledge is good and useful when we need to learn about something, but when we are in a jam and don’t have time to learn we should turn to the One who knows everything. He has our answers. I know from experience that God answers when we are sincere in wanting to know. I heard a saying that went something like this, It’s not what you know; it’s Who you know.

1. If you only “know about” God, I want to invite you to make the transfer. Seek Him today!

2. If you are facing a hard choice today, turn to God and ask Him for His wisdom in the situation.

Thank You for Your wisdom! I don’t know where I would be without You! Thank You for direction and wisdom in my life! I ask You to be with me today and help me hear Your voice so that I can make wise choices! Amen.
