A Faithful Steward

For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.

- Matthew 25:29

I’ve never been the greatest with money, but I also wouldn’t go so far to say I’m horrible. I’ve definitely made many poor choices, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve become wiser in my decisions.

I think the biggest obstacle when managing money is the choices you make - whether big or small. Jesus explains this in the parable of the talents. He explains how three servants were each given talents from their master. They each had the choice of what to do with them. The first took his five and traded them for other five talents. The second who received two gained another two, but the third who received only one chose to bury his.

Then when their master returns the first two have something to show for what he left them with, but the third has only what the master gave him. He chose to do nothing with the money he was given.

Jesus makes such a good point here that we must make smart choices with the money we are blessed with in this life. That He, the ultimate master, is the one who has gifted us the ability to make these choices, and makes us a steward of the things he’s given us. We can either choose to use our resources to work and gain more, to invest it and double what we once had, or to simply sit on it and do nothing. The choice is ours, but He can help guide us.

Now, you might be saying “well, I sure don’t feel blessed with money right now”. And I get that. We all have times where we struggle financially, but we must learn to lean on God during these hardships and know that He has a plan (even ones we cannot see) and will not leave us high and dry as all our money is His money.

So friend, when you are stressed out to the max about money - whatever that may entail - just know you are not alone. That friend you have that you think has it all together - I bet she is just as, if not more, stressed as you are about finances. So, please do not feel ashamed to reach out to a friend or family member for advice.

Sometimes those who you least expect it can give you the greatest and simplest advice to help manage money. I know I have had to learn that the hard way. But don’t forget about the One who has it all mapped out for you, who knows exactly how you feel and what you are going through. He can bring you the peace you are searching for.

Leave your worries with Him, and trust His plan - because He cares for us emotionally, physically, and financially.

Reflection

1. What is one wise choice you can make today with money?

2. Is there someone you can reach out to for advice if you need it, and if you don’t - can you think of someone who may be struggling and pray for them today?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come to You today filled with stress and worry. Help guide us through these emotions, and give us the much needed peace only You can provide. Show us that with You by our side, we can make smart money choices. In Jesus’ name, amen.
