You Are There

I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!

If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.

If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans,

even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night

- but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.

- Psalms 139:7-12 (NLT)

My very first job was delivering local newspapers in my neighborhood. My 9 year-old-self wasn’t always thrilled to have said job. There was one street in particular that frightened me. I didn’t know why exactly, but every time I turned the corner and stepped foot onto that street, fear would cripple me. I would often think to myself that there was just something “bad” about this street and it was covered in “darkness.”

To say I dreaded delivering newspapers because of one street would have been an understatement. There is just something about being alone in darkness when you’re a kid that is completely terrifying. I suppose the same could be said for adults too. No one likes being alone in the darkness, do they?

This week we’re focusing on the Psalms. When I was asked to share my favorite Psalm with you, right away I knew I’d be writing to you about Psalm 139. It’s not one specific verse, but rather the entire chapter. It’s been my favorite chapter for years because the author paints a breathtaking picture of what a relationship with God looks like. Whether you want a relationship with God or not, He wants one with you. He knows our past. He knows our present. He knows our future.

God sees what no one else can see in us and knows what no one else knows about us - including ourselves. Whether we choose to follow or deny Him, He is intimately a part of our DNA. There is nowhere we can go where He can’t find us and nothing we can do that will make Him love us less.

Psalm 139:13-16 reads: “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous - how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Everyday of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.”

There is nothing that has happened or will happen that God doesn’t know about. Whatever I may face, He has allowed . Darkness can fully surround me, whether it’s a scary street or feeling isolated and alone. But in Jesus name, fear will never cripple me again because I’m living in the light of who He is. I hope and pray that you can walk boldly in that truth too.

1. What fear or darkness has crippled you from doing something you needed to do - whether in the past or the present?

2. Does the truth that God knows you better than you know yourself change the way you pursue Him?

Marvelous Creator, thank You for creating and pursuing me despite what You see and know about me. I echo David's prayer from Psalms 139:23 and 24... “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” Help me to illuminate Your light to those surrounded in darkness - that it may bring You glory. In Your sovereign name I pray, Amen.
