To the Spiritual Mother...

But Ruth replied, "Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn

back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay.

Your people will be my people and your God my God."

- Ruth 1:16

Being a spiritual mother looks a bit different for me. Because for me, I am a mom here on earth and in Heaven. My daughter is three, and my son was stillborn May 10th of last year. My only connection to him is through Jesus. I know though that no matter how much I want him here with me - he is living the glorious life in Jesus’ arms. He is being well taken care of, and so purely loved.

I see this kind of Heavenly love from Naomi to her daughter-in-laws after her own sons died. She wanted them to go and find new husbands and live a full life, but Ruth refused. Ruth gave that love right back to Naomi by clinging to her and God. She chose to follow after a God whom she wasn’t even a follower of. She chose Him over herself.

This is something I see everyday in mothers. They choose their children and their needs over their own. They choose to give the love they receive from our Heavenly Father. They choose others first.

But there are a wide variety of mothers - boy moms, girl moms, adoptive moms, foster moms, grieving moms, and so forth. Those are the ones I personally have a soft spot for. The ones who are very much mothers, but have no child(ren) to show for it. They have a hole in their heart they believe will always be missing.

I’ve come to find though that this hole can be filled. It can be filled fully, and spiritually full from the love of God. He can give that love in many different ways. We see this in Ruth and Naomi! God used Ruth to fill that hole of grief Naomi was feeling from losing all of her family, and showing her that not everyone is going to leave her. That He is there for her through Ruth, and she is still a mother.

Mother’s Day can be really hard for some moms. It won’t always be a day of celebration, but it will always be a day for any type of mom. So, whether you are a mom, a soon-to-be mom, hope to be a mom one day, or are a spiritual mom - this day is for you. Celebrate with the One who knows your heart and can celebrate perfectly with you. He knows your story, and He knows where you are headed.

1. Whichever type of mom you are right now, what is one thing you can pray for over your children, future children, or children God has put in your life to spiritually guide?

2. If you are struggling with motherhood right now, what is something you can do for yourself today?

Heavenly Father, we come to you today in the midst of the stage of motherhood we are in. Heal us, and restore us to You and show us where this stage is leading us. Help us to have hearts like Ruth and Naomi towards one another. Lead us in the path you have made for us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
