Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.
- Ephesians 3:20-21
Imagine dreaming without limits.
You know, those dreams that your mind is continuously wandering off to when life slows down? Or maybe in the chaos those wild dreams of yours are what keep you sane.
Whatever the case may be, there’s a chance that you have dreams so vast, so wild, that the only place that they exist are in the limitations of your mind. And honestly? There aren’t any limitations in your mind. Think back to when you were a little kid; the world was yours. You could be anyone you wanted to be, and you could do anything you wanted to do. You dreamed in vivid colors. Limits? You never heard of them.
But there comes a day when we all face this thing called “reality” and these unfamiliar limitations come crashing down around those beautiful, vibrant dreams of ours. Big dreams get frowned upon and you’re told they’re not realistic. Think smaller.
Now imagine there’s a new King in town and He’s out to take down Reality and his limitations. This King is the God we serve, and our God is a dreamer. He breaks those chains that have been holding you down with those dreams lingering just out of your reach.
Habakkuk 2 shows part of the dreaming heart of God from early on:
Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end -- it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.
- Habakkuk 2:2-3 ESV
This is the beauty of the freedom we have in Christ: to dream God-sized dreams. Dreams that are so exceedingly great that they seem absolutely impossible to accomplish on our own. They’re the dreams that exist at the very center of your heart, and they’re the ones that God is calling you out of your comfort zone to grasp onto and claim as your own. They’re the dreams so big that they cause us to be desperate for God.
We let our human minds get weighed down in the thoughts that we aren’t qualified enough for such wild dreams. We believe that there’s a reason that those dreams have only existed within our minds, but when we understand that they were placed there by the One who created our hearts, it seems to ignite a fire within the deepest parts of us. And in Jesus, we are free to chase after those dreams without fear.
Through these wild dreams, we see God’s power when He proves Himself faithful. Keep those verses in Habakkuk close to your heart. Remember that our God is a dreamer. Write your dreams down, claim them as your own. While we’ve been set free to dream, keep in mind that God’s timing is never quite like our own. When our dreams align with God’s will for us, it will surely come. It will not delay.
1. What are some of your wildest dreams that you can only achieve with the help of God? Write them down as a reminder of everything God is doing in your life.
2. What limitations have you seen God break down in your life recently? Because of this, how are you more free to dream in Him?
God, we thank You that You’re a creative God. Thank You that You shatter any and all limitations in our minds, and for calling us into more than we could ever imagine for ourselves. Give us boldness, God, as we pursue the dreams You’ve placed within each of our hearts. Remind us to wait on Your timing, for it will not delay.
