Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you.
- 1 Peter 5:7
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
- Philippians 4:6-7
If God is all knowing then what is the point of praying? It’s a fair question. If God already knows what I need then why do I need to ask it? If God already knows what I will choose then why do I need to come to Him for direction and discernment?
The Earth shattering truth is God doesn’t need our request to begin spinning things in motion. He is God. He is in complete control, with or without us, but He chooses to include us. Why? Because that’s what crazy, unbelievable, radical, unconditional, rescuing love does!
Prayer isn’t so much about the ask as it is about the relationship. God does already know all we will say before we say it. All we will do before we do it. And as His children we should find it comforting that we are known and seen in this way.
Prayer is about us forming a relationship with our Heavenly Father and learning about who He is and who He made us to be.
Jesus made a way through dying on the cross and defeating death for us to have an intimate relationship with God. For us to be able to know God, really know Him, which allows us to better know who we were created to be.
Prayer also gives us a Heavenly mindset. It shifts our perspective. It reminds us God is bigger than whatever worry is thumping around in our heads. God cares for us, therefore we can give every concern, worry, heartache, or request to Him. In doing this we allow ourselves to encounter Heaven on Earth more (Matthew 6:10). How?
Through the prayers being answered. If we truly believe God is all knowing, then whether we pray something or not, God already knows what’s going to happen, right? But if we pray it, then we see through a Heavenly perspective how God answered it. Without those initial prayers in life, we often miss God in the outcome, in the answer, because we never had the conversation with Him from the get-go. We miss out on the miracles of life because we never asked to see them.
When we don’t ask, then our hearts and our minds aren’t always prepared to see how God is working even in the smallest details of our lives.
Prayer is powerful not because of anything we do or say, but because God is bigger than anything in our life. Through prayer we get to experience how big He is, His goodness, and His faithfulness all the time simply because we readied our hearts, minds, and souls to see it.
I could give you a bajillion reasons why prayer is good and why we should do it, but for me personally I only need one: I pray because knowing God intimately changes everything!
1. Why have you prayed in the past? What has led you to pray?
2. What are you praying for in this season? What are you not praying for? Why?
3. I challenge you to write down one prayer that you think is simply impossible and give it to God.
Lord, thank You that you are bigger than anything in my life. Thank You that You care so much about me that You want to include me in the miracles of life. That you want me to see You and share You! Lord, I ask that You help me pray more. To experience You more. To come to You more. Lord, I don’t want to miss out on knowing You and experiencing all You have for me. Lead me to You in prayer over and over again.
