Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
- Philippians 4:6
When I go into prayer I always try to thank God for what He has given me in this life, and to ask Him for any understanding and knowledge I need first before asking for requests. I’m not perfect and this doesn’t always happen, but I like to strive for this. Because in a self-absorbed world full of selfies, getting the most likes, and being picture perfect on social media, our prayers seem to lean towards what society has taught us. That’s it’s all about me, me, me.
So where does that leave us praying like Jesus? Well, multiple times throughout Scripture we witness Jesus finding quiet time away from society to meet with God and pray. (Matthew 14:23, Matthew 26:36, Mark 1:35, Mark 6:46, Luke 6:12) But really He was simply having a conversation with His Father. Which is what we should strive to do. God wants that relationship with you! He wants you to feel like you can just come to Him and talk. He wants you to come to Him about anything and everything. The big and the small.
Does that mean that sometimes our prayers can’t just be a cry for help? Of course not. Jesus even cried for help on the cross. Matthew 27:46 says “At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, ‘Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?’ which means ‘My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?’” I don’t know about you, but I have definitely had a cry to God like this. When I was sick with my first son and the doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong, I cried to Him to heal me. And He did heal me, but not in the way I wanted. I wanted to be healed and continue my pregnancy - not have my son stillborn. So even though my prayer was answered, it just wasn’t in the way I wanted it to be because He had a plan for me. A plan I couldn’t quite see yet, but once I got there it all became clear to me.
So friend, don’t be discouraged when you cry to God and you feel like all you hear is silence. He is there, watching and waiting. He has a plan for you, and maybe you can see it or maybe you can’t, but His plan is always the best plan.
1. What is one way you can improve your prayer life today?
2. How can you escape from society to be alone with God?
Heavenly Father, I come to You today to seek You and know You better. I want to experience you the way Jesus did - in the calm and quiet. I want the relationship of Father and daughter where we just have a conversation on a daily basis. I don’t want to stress over whether my prayer has been good enough and if I remembered to say everything and ask for the right things. Because the truth is You already know everything on my heart, so if I get carried away talking with You and forget - it’s okay. So be with me today and have the Holy Spirit remind me to just simply talk with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
