Instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love, He embraced us. He took our sin-dead lives and made us alive in Christ. He did all this on His own, with no help from us! Then He picked us up and set us down in highest heaven in company with Jesus, our Messiah.
- Ephesians 2:4-6 (MSG)
Do you remember learning to ride a bike? The person who was teaching you would hold onto the back of the seat while continuing to say “keep going, I won’t let go.” As soon as those last words came out of their mouth, they would let go and before you knew it, you were riding your bike all by yourself.
Sometimes we forget that love is not just holding you but it’s running alongside. It is promising that there is someone, who, even though “let’s go,” their hand never leaves the place they would catch you if you started to fall.
This is love. This is love when it doesn’t make sense. Where you may be tired and weary but you keep giving your all for that person to know they have a place in your home, in your spaces, in your life. It’s a laying down of your life for the sake of someone else. This is God’s love.
Can we be honest though? There are sometimes people that come through our life that let go of the back of our bike... and as we are riding off into wherever we may be going, they are standing behind us waving and shouting, “Good luck out there!”
It confuses us. We look back and as we are questioning where they are, we are faced with the feelings of abandonment and frustration. They feel like a scrape to our knees as they try to convince us that we should have never let someone in; that we should have never trusted someone to come alongside us when they were going to stand from the sidelines instead.
In Ephesians 2:4-6 (MSG) it says, “Instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love, He embraced us. He took our sin-dead lives and made us alive in Christ. He did all this on His own, with no help from us! Then He picked us up and set us down in highest heaven in company with Jesus, our Messiah.”
Instead. But God.
God intends and wants His love in us to make us come alive. He wants us to see that when it is easier not to love, that is when we can love with a Godly love. And when there are sometimes moments where people disappoint our heart or we disappoint theirs, I pray the only meaning of love that truly matters be the one of how God has chosen you, loved you without expecting you to give anything in return, and has given you a place where, when maybe someone else has let go of the back of your bike and isn’t running alongside you, He is right there.
1. What is one way you have seen God love you this week?
2. Whose love have you been putting before God’s love in your life?
3. 1 John 4:7 says, “Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God.” Who is one person you can reflect God’s love to this week that maybe in the past, you have struggled to reflect to?
Lord, I realize how often I think that Your love is comparable to how others love me, and would the truth be in my heart that it’s just not comparable. Thank You that it is different and that when I look at how You love, I am in turn able to reflect that into other peoples’ lives so that they can see even the smallest glimpse of You. Would You help me in the moments where I want to put expectations on other people to love me well but don’t seek out Your love first. Thank You that the truth that is found in all of this is that it was never what I could do or what others could do, but it was because You sent Jesus to die for us-the ultimate reflection of love. Amen.
