Free From the Bondage to Comparison

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. - John 10 verse 10NKJV

Not knowing who you are and what you are called for is one of the darkest pits one can find themselves in. When you don’t know what you have you live in a constant struggle of comparing your looks, what you have, and what you have acquired with everyone around you. You constantly question if you’re a good enough or not, if you have done enough or not. Comparison is a very cold prison that any person can find themselves in.

I remember growing up, I always compared myself to everyone I deemed to be better than me. Each time I’d do that I was left feeling sorry for myself, feeling heavy and sad, or worse - I would feel empty and lacking. The Scripture above brings a fresh understanding of the author of comparison. He comes for very few things and will stop at nothing to achieve his mission: constantly locking you inside or keeping you trapped in the prison of comparing yourself.

He tries to:

1. Steal your joy

2. Kill your confidence

3. Destroy your true identity

His agenda is to keep you from living your best life. Worse now, we live in the era of social media where we constantly have to check how many followers we have compared to the next person, how many likes or retweets you receive, and it gets so difficult to remain content. It is important to understand that you are not everybody else, you don’t have to have everything they have, and you don’t have to be like everyone else, you are you and that’s perfectly fine.

So today I want us all to keep this in mind, a post that I saw a while ago said, “Don’t let your ice cream melt while counting somebody else’s sprinkles” ~Akilah Hughes. You are enough and you are created perfectly, so don’t compare yourself or your achievements to anyone else. God is happy with you and loves just where you are. Don’t open a door for the thief to come tell you otherwise. You don’t have to look outside to be secure, everything you need today is within you through Jesus, lean in.

So I am inviting to take some time out of your busy schedule and shine God's Word on every area of your life that always compares itself. Speak life to it and set yourself free from the bondage of comparison.

Reflection

1. In what areas have you been opening the door for the thief to come in and steal your identity?

2. What truth from God about your identity do you need to claim today?

Prayer

Father God thank You for the gift of life, and thank You that Jesus came that we might have life and have it in abundance. Today we allow the Holy Spirit to help us deal with any insecurities and desires to compare in us. We thank You that in You we are enough, now God give us the ability to see ourselves as You see us, Amen.
