Let the Old Fall Away

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

- 2 Corinthians 5:17

Just as a butterfly emerges from its cocoon and its old existence falls away, so does our old self when we give our lives to Jesus. A new spiritual birth has taken place and we will never be the same! This is salvation. But there is a little more to salvation. It’s the step that a lot of people never take. Some people accept Jesus for their eternal lives but miss the part where we are suppose to surrender (give it all) our present lives to Him.

Jesus tells us to deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow Him. To deny ourselves means to give up our will and allow God’s will to be done. We take up our cross by choosing, in every moment we can, to be more like Jesus. To follow Him is to be like Him. This is what God calls all believers to do. I wondered for a long time what exactly that meant. To be like Jesus is simply to love. His way is the way of love. Jesus said to love God first and then people. To be able to love others we first have to receive God’s love for ourselves. In order to do this we have to let worldly ways fall away from our lives. The Bible tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our mind. We are to think on things above. Lovely thoughts need to fill our mind. Our focus has to shift from the world to Jesus.

I recently heard a speech at a high school graduation. The speaker was talking about excellence, but I took his words and applied them to the new life we have in Jesus. He said excellence is a choice. You have to choose it every day and it isn’t something you waver on. You are either all in or your not. Same thing with following Jesus. We have to let the things of the world fall away to give Jesus first priority in our lives. It’s a commitment. We are called to give our lives to Jesus so we can live out our God-given purpose. God wants His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. The only way is through you.

Reflection

1. What needs to “fall away” from your life to give more room for Jesus?

2. Are you willing to live for Jesus? If not, pray to be willing.

3. Do whatever it takes to focus on Jesus!

Prayer

Thank You Lord for my salvation! Thank You for my new life in Jesus. Because Jesus gave His life for me, I give You my life! Take my life and do Your will. Use my life for Your glory, help me make my time here count for something eternal. Help me give up the temporary things of earth for the treasures You have for me in heaven! Amen.
