And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.
- Luke 10:41-42
Today’s culture tells us to hide our faith in Jesus, keep it to ourselves, and to submit to society’s ways. This is something I struggle with so much. I want to be accepting of everyone and not shut them out in any way, so I stuff down my beliefs in certain situations. This is neither God honoring nor loving. Jesus would want me to go against the grain and speak of Him and how many wonderful things He has done for me. He wants me to be His disciple in today’s sin-filled society.
This is exactly why He told Martha that Mary had chosen that which was right. She went against societal expectations of being a host and not fulfilling the domestic responsibilities that women had. Jesus empowered Mary to do this and instead treasure Him and sit at His feet to be His disciple.
While what Martha was doing (making an extravagant meal, cleaning, serving) was an honor in their time - Jesus didn’t see it that way. Women hardly got to learn about the Torah, (the law of God as revealed to Moses and recorded in the first five books of the Bible) so the opportunity to learn from a teacher such as Jesus was an even much larger honor.
You and I have that honor my friend. We have that honor every single day when we wake up. We have a choice of whether to be Jesus’ disciple or society’s. I don’t know about you, but I choose Jesus. I will forever choose Him starting today. I need to work on this just as much as anyone else. There’s such a stigma to being a Christian in society, and we need to work together to break it down by sharing the Gospel everywhere we go. Because the more people who know Him, the more people we reach who also get to love Him and share about Him every day!
1. How can you be a disciple for Jesus today?
2. How has Jesus empowered you?
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus here not only for my sins but to also represent You in a way that empowers women to be a disciple for You. Because of society’s demands and expectations of us it makes it more challenging to worship You in the everyday life. But You have shown us to object that notion and put You above all else. That we have what it takes to learn Your Word, share it and You with the world. We are a unique disciple Jesus has empowered to bring a different perspective. Help us each and every day to remember what is good and right. In Jesus’ name, amen.
