Jesus Released the Voice of Women

The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran

back to the village, telling everyone, “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?”

- John 4:28-29

You may have read or heard the story of the woman at the well. Have you wondered why her story is so significant? I believe that whoever “gets” her story is someone who has lived a similar one. Or even someone who may have different circumstances but has felt the way she did. She had been married 5 times and was living with a man who wasn’t her husband. She was physically, spiritually, and emotionally dry. She was probably looked down upon in her community and felt worthless. She went to the well to fill a physical need but encountered the One who could fill her spiritual need. This woman was looking in all the wrong places for love until that day when she met Jesus.

Jesus talking to her was a shock because she was a Samaritan and He was a Jew. She expected Him to look down on her, but instead He reached out to her. Jesus spoke about her life in a way that she had not personally revealed to Him, she knew there was something about Him that was different. He brought out in her that need she had been feeling for so long and satisfied it! She was so excited and overwhelmed that she just had to share the good news! Because she knew He was the Messiah!

The woman at the well became the town evangelist! Before her encounter with Jesus, she lived a shameful life but after Jesus her life was forever changed! He empowered her to speak out about Him! When you encounter Jesus for the first time, you can’t help but tell everyone what He has done for you, and that He will do the same for them! The significance of her story is that she wouldn’t have spoken out and had a voice if she hadn’t encountered Jesus! She is included in the Bible to show us that even when we feel hopeless, distraught and in the dark, that Jesus can change our lives! His love conquers all and empowers us to step out, speak out, and live out our true identity!

1. How can you speak out about Jesus today in your circle of influence?

2. Who is someone in your life that you can share the story of Jesus with and give them hope?

Jesus, You know my story and You know how much my life has changed! I want to thank you for reaching out to me and for lifting me out of my pit. Before You there was a dark long tunnel with only glimmers of light. But now I see Your marvelous light and I ask that You help me to share it with others. Give me the words to say to lead others to You. Amen.
