Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
- Luke 7:50
She was seen as unworthy, which was probably a usual occurrence for this woman. She had a reputation as a “sinful woman,” even though sin and falling short of God’s expectations is something we all struggle with. This woman desperately wanted to meet Jesus, which would have been difficult given her status. But she learned that He was having dinner at Simon the Pharisee's house, and she came ready to worship Him.
When the woman was at Simon’s house, she was judged for her sins. Luke 7:39 says, “When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner!” Simon thought that if Jesus was really was a prophet, he would know her and her sin and would want nothing to do with her. But Jesus did know her; He loved her and He forgave her.
This woman was so grateful to see Jesus, she wept at his presence and poured perfume at His feet, this gesture showed her love for Christ. Luke 7:47 says, “Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven - as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.” which highlights Jesus’ appreciation. Jesus had respect for this woman. He didn’t cast her aside and say that her sins are too much. He forgave her, and He loved her well.
In a time where women were not shown the same respect and dignity, Jesus saw us, welcomed us, and gave us a voice. There are still times today where we might feel like we are not valued or respected because we are women. But know that God has created us with purpose, and for a purpose.
I love Luke 12:6-7 which says, “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” This reminds me that my worth is not found in the ideas of the world, but that it is found in Jesus, and I am so thankful for that.
1. What are some of the ways that you have felt God’s love and respect in your own life?
2. How can you show that same respect to others?
Dear God, thank You for sending Your Son to die on the cross for our sins. Thank You for seeing me, help me to recognize my worth in You. When I am feeling like I don’t belong, please comfort me and give me peace only You can provide. Thank You for respecting me and loving me even when the world tells me I am not good enough. I am forever grateful for Your love and forgiveness. Amen.
