Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins. Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.
- Mark 12:41-44
One widow, two coins, and the heart of a giver allowed this woman to honor God. By the world’s standards her gift may not have been much, but in God’s eyes she was an example to follow. The value of her gift wasn’t about the amount she gave, it was about laying down ALL THAT SHE HAD for the Lord.
Jesus recognized that she was able to give all that she had because she trusted the Lord, and that trust was an example He wanted others to follow. Isn’t it interesting that Jesus made this observation knowing He was about to do the very same for us? His sacrifice cost Him everything, and yet He became a sacrifice generously out of love and compassion for each of us. He trusted that His father’s plans for the world were what was best, and He lived his life according to that truth.
In Matthew 16:24-26 NLT, He encourages us by saying this, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?”
When we become a follower of Jesus we are called to trust in the Lord and seek Him with all of our hearts and our souls (Deuteronomy 4:29). We can apply this Scripture to our lives by knowing that giving up our own way means recognizing and trusting that the Lord’s way is better, and giving Him the chance to lead us into what He says is best for us (Romans 8:28).
1. How does your life set an example and look like someone who trusts God with all of your heart?
2. What is one thing that you have been struggling to give over to the Lord?
3. What would it look like for you to give “everything” to the Lord?
Lord, I give You all that I am. I trust You with my future, my present, and my past. Write my story, Lord, in the way that brings You the most glory. I trust that You can do immeasurably more than I can think or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). Lord show me if there are any areas in my life where I am struggling to give over to You. Help me Lord to trust that Your ways are better than mine. Show me Lord what it would look like for me to give You everything as the widow did. Thank You that Your promises for my life will always prove to be true, and that You will be my refuge and protection (Psalm 18:30).
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
