At Home in Him

Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.

- Ephesians 1:4-5

This is what He wanted to do. This is what He chose to do. It wasn’t tedious, it wasn’t a burden for Him, but rather it gave Him great pleasure. Can you even begin to fathom that? Because I sure can’t.

Despite our mess, despite our wayward hearts and sinful minds, His love ran so deep that it sent Him to the cross on the pursuit to call us His own. It’s a love deeper than that of a friend, it’s a love that chose to adopt us into His own family.

God saw me, in my mess and with my heart that is so quick to run, and He still decided that I was worth it. He knew my deepest, most struggled with flaws and He chose to redeem me through Christ to be holy and without fault in His eyes. And He did the exact same for you.

My biggest struggle in accepting this adoptive love is coming to terms with the fact that there’s nothing in this world that can make Jesus walk away or change His mind about bringing me into His family. So often I let the image of love painted by this world bleed into the picture of Jesus’ love and the two become blurry.

But our God is such a trustworthy God. Not once will He ever let us down or waver in His decision. Even when we are so quick to forget the redemptive power of what was done on the cross, He shows up day after day, showering us in mercy and grace sufficient for the day.

“I remember the days of old; I meditate on all that you have done; I ponder the works of your hands...Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust.”

- Psalm 145:5,8 ESV

Look at all He’s brought you out of. Look at what He’s saved you from. You are at home in Him. He isn’t going anywhere. There’s nothing in this world that makes my heart feel more secure than this promise of His steadfast love. There’s no changing His mind.

When we truly reflect on what Jesus did for us on the cross, we see our chains broken and our hearts set free. We’re no longer slaves to sin, but instead, every need is satisfied and every hurt is redeemed as we are brought into His family. That is the entire point of the cross: to bring us home to Him. Everything we could ever want is fulfilled in all of who He is.

You were chosen, just as you are, to be a member of God’s family. Countless brothers and sisters in Christ, never-ending, steadfast love, and grace upon grace are found in this home. There’s no second guessing, You are His, and in Him you have your forever home.

1. What does being adopted into the family of God look like in your life? What does it set you free from?

2. How will being God’s daughter change the way you live your life?

Father we thank You for bringing us into Your family, regardless of our brokenness. Thank you for Your promises that assure us You will never leave us nor forsake us. You fulfill every need we could ever have, and it’s my prayer that those things will not be easily lost on us. Help us turn to You when our hearts begin to wander. Thank You for the community we have in our brothers and sisters and Christ. Thank You for setting us free in You, Lord.
