After supper, he took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.”
- Luke 22:20
Just like that, the covenant changed. Before Jesus, the covenant between man and God had many steps and sacrifices. The original covenant with Abraham and God called for him to shed his own blood through circumcision, and he was even tested to shed his own son’s blood through sacrifice (Genesis 22:2-18). This was only the beginning of the many covenants between man and God. Each covenant continued through each generation (Leviticus 26:42) and each one held more standards than the last. Part of this covenant required them to make sacrifices from animals, without blemish, and sometimes multiple, just to pray and have a relationship with God. But that was just the beginning! Soon they’d have to go through the priests and use incense, and oils, and so much more! Honestly, I don’t know how they remembered it all.
But then came Jesus. He was our ultimate sacrifice. He shed His blood so we could be free. He broke the old covenant and made a new one. One where He became the way, the truth, and the life. No more sacrifices, and no more bloodshed! And I don’t know about you, but I am super grateful He did because in today’s high-demand society there’s no stinking way I’d remember all the steps to sacrifices!
Today we are reminded of this covenant every time we take communion (Matthew 26:26-28). We remember how Jesus gave His body up for our sins. The only One on earth who never needed to make daily sacrifices, to ask for forgiveness, or needed a covenant. He was our spotless lamb. (Hebrews 7:27)
Friend, I don’t know what you are going through today, but I do know that He is with you. You need not create an altar for sacrifices, find an animal without blemish, and go to a priest to speak with God. You need only talk, and open your heart. He is waiting for you. And boy, is He excited to hear from you. So, go - be with Abba Father today and thank Him for the ultimate sacrifice of His Son, for what a wonderful thing it is to be with Him here on earth, and ultimately beyond the veil!
1. If you did or didn’t know about the old covenant sacrifices and all the steps, what one piece of it can you sit with today?
2. How can you celebrate being a part of the new covenant today?
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus to be our spotless lamb. The world would be a much different place without the new covenant. I am so grateful to be able to spend my time here on earth with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
