And since we are His children, we are His heirs. In fact,
together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory.
- Romans 8:17
I became a believer in Jesus Christ when I was 5 or 6 years old. I always believed God loved me, in fact, we would sing about it in Sunday school: “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so…”
I didn’t know what it meant for God to be my Father or for me to be adopted into His family. Jesus’ death on the cross was scary to think about and I would cringe at the thought of nails being driven through His hands, His body bleeding for hours.
While it is difficult to fully imagine how painful it would be to see Jesus hanging on a tree, the cross is sacred to Christians because of what it symbolizes. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross meant that we could be saved from our sins, which separate us from God. God did not have to send His sinless, perfect Son to die, but it pleased Him to do so. 1 John 4:9 says, “God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him.”
God loved the people He created so much that He wanted them in His family. He wanted to send Jesus to the world, so that they could be free from being chained down by sins like pride, gossiping, and worrying. God wanted them to know Him as merciful and receive the inheritance that comes with being in His family--that is, citizenship in heaven.
It can be hard to believe that we are loved fully when we experience rejection from the people around us, but God’s love is not conditional. When we mess up or forget to pray or have a burst of anger, God still loves the people He has saved. It is not because of our actions that makes God love us, but that through accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior, we can be part of His family, children of the Most High King.
“See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!”
- 1 John 3:1
1. In what ways have you struggled to believe God loves you?
2. How does Jesus’ death and resurrection change the way you live and have a relationship with God?
Father, thank You for loving me when I don’t feel loved. Thank You for choosing me and adopting me into Your family, even while I still sin. Help me to live like I am loved by You. I want to keep remembering how precious the cross is to my salvation. Help me to show others Your love and mercy, Amen.
