Thank God for His mercy! As a 12-year-old I followed a friend up to the front of a movie theater to pray for Jesus to come into my life. I’d like to say that there was some huge, life-changing shift in my life, but that was not the case.

High school included experimentation and rule breaking only to be followed by college and an endless pursuit of bad decisions. I know He never gave up on me and for that I am grateful. It wasn’t until I got married to my high school boyfriend, Jon, and we had children that a semblance of maturity revealed itself. Having kids makes life “real” and at that time we both knew that we needed to get serious about our faith. Our choices were affecting more than just us so it was important to get our acts together.

I believe there are no coincidences. Because He is always involved in our lives, I truly saw God’s hand at work as I entered my late 30’s. Through some interesting circumstances I ended up at a women’s conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was through the words of the guest speaker, Ruth Senter, that God grabbed my heart in such a way that it changed me forever! The sessions felt as if no one else was there and God was communicating directly to me. Ever since that weekend He has influenced and directed my life and I have tried to grow and follow Him better each day.

In 1998 I was hired as the Director of Early Childhood ministries at the large church we attended. At that time I developed a preschool and from there the job grew. We served approximately 300 children and their families every week. Those were exciting times and I felt that I was able to use the gifts God had given me and before I knew it my title became “pastor.” Sometimes God’s humor amazes me. A pastor, really?

My life was very busy with 3 teenagers, a husband, and a full-time job but it became evident to me that I needed more training so in 2005 I enrolled in Alliance Theological Seminary. Our cohort met every Thursday for 2 1/2 years including two, intensive weeks in New York City. What an adventure! It was through ATS that my faith grew, my worldview expanded, and I began to love the Lord in a new, energizing way! In 2007 I received my Master’s degree in Christian Leadership.

Currently I work on a leadership team at our little church in the heart of inner-city Dayton, Ohio. We are faced with addiction, family dysfunction, poverty, etc. but we call it home and God is here. I also work for Dayton public schools. It was recently a failing school district, but hopefully it is on the rise. Of course I believe Jesus is the answer to many of our problems! I take each day one at a time and pray that God will always be the most important thing in my life. He alone is worthy.

Today I believe with all of my heart that His ways are the best ways! I have been blessed to be a blessing to someone else and that is how I choose to spend my life. Even though I am nowhere perfect like Jesus it is my desire to know Him better and trust Him more every day. I am grateful for His loving patience with me.

At Lane of Roses we believe Stories are Powerful. We share stories from women all around the world who come from different backgrounds, and while every story on the Lane of Roses website may be different, the common denominator is that a relationship with God through faith in Jesus changed each woman’s life. Statements made by guest contributors are meant to communicate each individual’s experience and do not necessarily reflect doctrinal alignment of Lane of Roses. Please contact us with any questions regarding our statement of faith.
