Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
- 2 Corinthians 9:6-8
One of the best gifts we can give this holiday season is simply the act of giving itself. To some that may mean donating, serving, or finding the perfect gift for a loved one. There are many ways that we can celebrate and contribute to this spiritual gift. Those of us that have received the gift of giving often feel called to give their resources by means of material items, gifts, money, food, and clothing, among other things.
Personally, I absolutely love finding small ways to give back to those around me. Even if it’s something small, or an act of service, a small act of giving and kindness can be a great way to show the love of Christ to those in need in our local communities. By extending a helping hand, by means of whatever resources we have, we can start to reach those individuals who may otherwise not want to hear about the gospel.
With all the crazy events and celebrations, sometimes the whole season can feel like a whirlwind from start to finish. We may find ourselves getting consumed by consumerism or simply just not being present when we’re with friends, family, and the community around us. While the hustle and bustle can be fun, sometimes it can really wear you and your spirits down.
That’s why this season I’d like to challenge you to really dedicate what time and resources you already have to those you love. Put the phones down and have real conversations. If you have a family member or friend that is down on their luck, and you are blessed enough to contribute financially or with another resource, take that opportunity to lift their burdens. Find true joy in the act of giving.
The true meaning of the season has absolutely nothing to do with pretty lights and wrapped up packages (although they are quite lovely), but the one who gave the ultimate gift for us. So get together with you family and experience the true meaning of Christmas together this year. You could even celebrate by finding a way to give back together!
“You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.” - 2 Corinthians 9:11
1. What is one way I can share the gift of giving with a friend or family member over the holidays?
2. Is there a ministry at your local church that you could get involved with this season?
Dear Lord, I pray that you will lead each of us to open our hearts up to giving this holiday season. Show us how we can bless those around us and help us to fully be present. We thank You for all the many wonderful spiritual gifts that You’ve given each of us. In Jesus name, amen.
