I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I
have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.
- 2 Timothy 4:7-8
I sheepishly walk through the gates, down the gold-lined streets, through the enormous doors directly to the King’s throne. My hats stack high on my head and I walk like I’m on a tightrope trying to balance them all - daughter, student, coworker, friend, leader, roommate. Slowly but surely, step by step, I walk.
There’s this recurring thought that pops up once again, “Maybe if I add another hat to the pile, I’ll be good enough in God’s eyes… maybe if I take one more position, take on one more task, accept one more challenge. Maybe then I’ll have made it.”
As the thought races through my head I catch myself going off-balance. I take my eyes off the throne in front of me and begin to look around for anything that will balance me. And, before I knew it, my tower of hats comes crashing down.
The King gets up from His throne and walks toward me. But, all I can feel is shame… I’ve failed Him once more. Why couldn’t I hold them all? Why couldn’t I do it all? I drop my head and a tear begins to fall down my cheek.
It feels so heavy… the weight of all the hats. I don’t want to pick them back up. I don’t want to do it anymore.
He lifts my chin, looks into my eyes, and pulls out a crown - the most beautiful golden crown adorned with the finest jewels. He begins to lift it and place it on my head.
“No,” I say, “I don’t deserve it!”
“My daughter,” He replies, “this crown is the only one you’ll ever need. And the only one I care about. And it will never fall off. Leave all of those behind, they’re worthless here.”
And with that, He places the crown upon my head and reminds me… I’m home.
1. Are there any hats you’re wearing that you haven’t surrendered to God?
2. How can you live in the mindset of trading your hats for an eternal crown of righteousness?
God thank You that You promise me a crown of righteousness. Thank You that You give me hats so that I can cast them at Your feet. Thank You Lord that my righteousness is not reliant upon my works or my achievements but on the finished work of Your Son. Thank You that in You, I am home! I love You Lord, Amen.
