The light shines in the darkness, and the
darkness can never extinguish it.
- John 1:5
“These are dark times, there is no denying. Our world has perhaps faced no greater threat than it does today.” - Rufus Scrimgeour, from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
There’s no denying darkness in this world. I’ve experienced it, lived in it, and even permitted it to control my life. Perhaps the darkest time in my life was losing my Momma.
Darkness let itself in the front door of my life that day, and I didn’t request it to leave. I stood frozen as its spider-like fingers entwined themselves over every part of my being. Darkness’ toxins altered reality like a bad drug. My thoughts were a foreign language invading my mind, my actions were robotic in nature, and emotions - if any - were disgusting and heavy (mostly, though, I was just numb). Darkness held me down with chains. It became supreme ruler of my life, welcoming all that came with it: grief, depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and so much more. Its friends formed a circle around me, closed in, and smothered even the tiniest rays of light that broke through.
But God. God is everything darkness isn’t. Most importantly for me, He is Light. The hope of Light is what I clung to in those days. Without that hope, I wouldn’t be sitting here typing this today. Light is what I longed for, what my darkness-encircled heart craved, and what felt most absent in those months.
“Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” - Albus Dumbledore, from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Dumbledore had it right. In what is arguably the darkest time of my life, I turned my face from the light and didn’t care to look for it again. I let myself stay in darkness for the longest time. It wasn’t until I decided enough was enough and turned to look for The Light that light came back into my life. Joy was found in the darkest time of my life once I remembered The Light.
1. When in your life have you had to deliberately remember to look to The Light to find joy in your life?
2. How can you work to live in a state of constantly keeping your face turned towards The Light instead of having to remind yourself to do so?
Father, I thank You for being the ultimate source of light in my life. Thank You for giving me a reason to have joy. You are Light, Peace, Joy, and so much more. I love You, Father, Amen.
